Questions

What is a homestead exemption?
A discount Texas gives on the home you live in. It takes $140,000 off the value your school taxes are based on, and caps how fast your taxable value can rise. It isn't automatic — it only applies once it's on file with the county.
What does "overpaying" mean?
The county is taxing your home as if the discount didn't exist. On a typical Travis County home that's about $1,300 a year more than you owe. Because you were entitled to it all along, the county refunds up to 2 prior years once it's approved.
How long until I see the money?
Most approvals come back within 30–90 days. The refund for prior years is paid by the county within 60 days of approval. Your current-year bill is corrected on the next statement, and every year after is lower automatically.
Can I file this myself for free?
Yes. Filing with the Travis Central Appraisal District costs nothing. What we add is the check that you're missing it, the back-years most people don't know to claim, the paperwork, and — if you want it — a licensed consultant handling it.
When do I pay?
DIY Kit: at checkout, refunded if the county denies the exemption. Done for you: nothing upfront — we save a card and charge the fee only after the county approves and your taxable value drops. We tell you before any charge.
Do I need my Texas ID?
Yes. The county requires a Texas driver's license or ID showing the property address. It's the most common reason applications are rejected — if yours doesn't match, update it at DPS first.
Can this raise my taxes?
No. A homestead exemption only lowers your taxable value, and it adds a 10% yearly cap on increases.
